I have been a professional bass guitar and double bass player for well over the past ten years. I have been fortunate that my vocation has found me in many exciting situations from recording at Abbey Road Studios to performing at Wembley Arena.
My passion has always been combining different styles of music and performing them with authenticity. Much of my career has often been spent ‘doubling’ or switching between both instruments on the same gig. When people ask ‘which instrument do you prefer?’ – my answer is always it depends entirely on what the music calls for. Swinging jazz, for me, will always find its home on the upright; while heavy straight 8th rock is nothing but the electric bass.
My musical career began in my early teens playing electric guitar in rock bands and double bass in the County Youth Orchestra. The bass guitar was a natural fusion of the two. Upon leaving school I spent four years on the jazz degree at Trinity College of Music and this is where I really discovered my passion for the bass and the role it plays in music. In reality I found I loved pretty much any sort of music and immersed myself in every style I could lay my hands on. This led me on to continue exploring the world of classical bass, which I feel any gives any musician a great rounding.
I never know quite how to describe myself musically. I think the most accurate way to put it is… I’m a ‘commercial musician‘. That’s not to say everything I do is commercial, but I get the biggest kick out of doing exactly what you’d expect a bass player to do at the bottom end of a band.
Over the years I’ve performed on many West End & touring theatre productions and have been inspired by the technology and production values these utilise. This lead me on to develop a unique multi-channel playback system for backing track content using Ableton Live. More recently I have been able to create my own niche as a bass player, musical director and running technical programming simultaneously.
